The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens has fun family events planned for the weekend to celebrate.
JACKSONVILLE, Florida – The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is one of the largest art museums in Northeast Florida. This week they are celebrating 60 years of service to the community and to visitors from across the country.
Thursday will mark the 60th anniversary of the opening of the doors to the public of the Cummer Museum.
The museum is celebrating all weekend with free admission, family entertainment, and live music.
“We are delighted to welcome people who have never been here before as well as people who make the Cummer a regular stop,” said museum director Andrea Barnwell Brownlee.
Brownlee said that in addition to the board of directors and staff, the community has kept the museum alive.
âSixty is all about who you really want to be when you grow up, and we definitely need community involvement,â Brownlee said.
To help move the museum forward, the staff launched a 30 & 30 in 30 Years campaign.
“We really hope to invite 60 family members as well as 60 people to join us at our Ponce De Leon member level, which is our donor company, so we have a big vision and we invite everyone to come and enjoy it with us, âBrownlee said.
Curator Holly Keris said things like donations are how they’ve grown the collection of just 60 pieces of art from founder Ninah Cummer to 5,000 pieces.
âI don’t think she could have predicted where we are today. I think she would be absolutely delighted to see the community support that this museum is privileged to have, âsaid Keris.
Brownlee said they will continue to make Ninah Cummer’s vision thrive.
âWe are moving at lightning speed. This incredible milestone includes special lectures examining his life and legacy, special events like dinners. We have an exciting list of exhibitions on the horizon, âsaid Brownlee.
